- Goitein (Koitein), Shelomoh Dov
- (b. 1900)Israeli orientalist. He was born in Burgkunstadt, Germany, and emigrated to Palestine in 1923. In 1928 he became a member of the faculty of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Hebrew University, where from 1947 he was professor. From 1957 to 1970 he was professor of Arabic at the University of Pennsylvania. He published works on the religious institutions of Islam, the culture of the Jews of Yemen, and texts from the Cairo Genizah.
